Oidē is an invitation you'd only use with people you're close to, and here that closeness happens naturally. With the team, who'll explain that karaage is crispy fried chicken and okonomiyaki a hearty cabbage pancake, and with whoever's next to you, ready to toast a kanpai over a shot of sake. Since tables are in demand, the wait ends up being part of the experience. The tip is to order a drink early and let things unfold, no rush.

The queue is part of the deal here, so we ended up chatting in line about what karaage actually is. By the time a spot opened at the counter, sitting together felt obvious. We toasted a kanpai like we'd planned it.
